Against his better judgement trapper Kit Carson takes the job as wagon-master to settlers heading for California from the Oregon Trail. With them is a company of soldiers with orders to find the fastest route west. They encounter hostile Indians armed by the Spanish who want to prevent Americanos colonizing what they see as part of Mexico.
